    "Matéria em português, tradução google.":

"The Wii Balance Board is the best-selling bathroom scale in the world."

That's in the running for stand-out quote of the show for me, but besides giving me the ridiculous mental picture of people trying to play Wii Fit in-between their tubs and toilets, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's words point out an incredible truth about the last four years – more than Mario, more than Zelda, more than anything else, the thing that got millions laying down their cash to become Wii owners was a flat slab of weight-sensing plastic and the promise that some of that weight could be lost with its use.

Now, Nintendo's trying to repeat its success in video game fitness. Wii Fit's new sequel will be Wii Fit U, which will be marketed for the company's next console with a double promise – first, that you'll be able to dust off and keep using that same likely-now-neglected Balance Board that you already paid for, and second that you'll get even more out of your work-outs thanks to another new peripheral packed in the box.

Which brings us to the Fit Meter.

We've seen this accessory before. Nintendo first introduced a version of it in 2009 alongside an under-the-radar DS release called Personal Trainer: Walking. It served as a simple pedometer, keeping up with your step count and then interfacing with the DS cartridge to track your mileage over time.

The company then revisited the product a year later with the "PokeWalker." This version was updated to include a built-in screen and housed in a circle-shaped piece of plastic accompanied by three small control buttons. It again logged your total number of steps as you took walks with it clipped to your clothing, but the motivation this time was leveling up and catching new Pokemon creatures.

And now we have the Fit Meter. The connection to those past pedometers is obvious – its form factor is even an exact match for the PokeWalker – but Mr. Iwata has promised that there's a lot more functionality packed into that same circle-shaped piece of plastic this time around.

The Fit Meter includes a pedometer, of course. It'll track how many steps you take when you go for a walk, or a jog, or an all-out run.

But now it's also got an altimeter inside. So if your morning strolls take you up and down severe inclines, you'll get more credit and recognition for the extra effort it takes you to climb and descend them than you would if you'd logged the same number of steps walking across perfectly level ground.

Then there's an atmospheric pressure sensor in there too. That means that the data the Fit Meter collects will take into account your position relative to sea level, as it's going to be tougher for someone to hike their way through, say, a Colorado mountain pass where the air is thinner than down on the California coastline.

Last of all, Mr. Iwata has said that the Fit Meter can combine all its collected data and create a composite that estimates your overall level of activity – even predicting what type of exercise you're doing while wearing it. All of that information is then passed back into the Wii Fit U game by pointing the Fit Meter toward the new Wii U GamePad's infrared sensor when you get home from your jog, or the gym, or wherever you've been out burning calories – and the game will then instantly tell you how many calories you've just burned, generating a detailed visual representation of your activity.

The ultimate result looks likes one of the most thorough pictures of on-going exercise that players have ever been able to get through a video game interface. And the potential for this new peripheral to recapture the attention of the Wii's fitness audience is something more mainstream gamers can't ignore when it comes to Wii U.

Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus have combined to move over 43 million copies over the past four years, many of them purchased right alongside the Wii itself by converts stepping into system ownership just so they can drop some pounds. If Nintendo can make that happen again, the Wii U could get a huge holiday season and New Year's resolution boost thanks to Wii Fit U and its new Fit Meter.

The GamePad and its built-in screen may be the face of the new system, but just like the Wii moved into homes on the strength of a bathroom scale, it's this little circle-shaped piece of plastic that could really become the Wii U's system seller.
